VICE CHANCELLOR – Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State.

Professor Amos Igbekele Ajibefun, First Class Scholar, erudite academic of international repute, seasoned and award-winning administrator, consummate achiever and the new Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, a 21st Century University, properly called, was born in Ode-Irele, in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria, on July 28, 1964. Professor Ajibefun had his elementary education at Methodist Primary School, Gbeleju Loda, Ode-Irele, from 1971-1977.

He attended United Grammar School, Ode-Irele, Ondo State, from 1979-1983. He gained admission to the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, in 1985 and graduated with First Class Honours in Farm Management and Extension and on top of his class in 1990.

Professor Ajibefun received a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics in 1992 at the University of Ibadan and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in 1999.

A consummate academic, Professor Ajibefun has had 21 years in teaching, his love and the only profession he has known all his life. He began his teaching career as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in 1993 and rose through the ranks to become a full Professor on October 1, 2009. At the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Professor Ajibefun held several administrative positions and membership of Committees, including being Coordinator, Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Agricultural Economics and Extension, and Head of Department, Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, Member of Senate; Member, Senate Curriculum Committee; Member, Computer Resource Center; and Chairman, Faculty Examinations Committee.

Professor Ajibefun was appointed Rector, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, in November 2010, a position he held until his appointment as the Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, on January 5, 2015. While in the saddle at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Professor Ajibefun engaged in huge and unprecedented infrastructural and academic transformation of the institution.

He facilitated and executed over 30 projects, including 1, 800-seater auditorium, Information and Communication Technology Building (ICT), Students’ Union Building; a storey Block of Offices and Classrooms for Faculty of Applied Sciences; Classrooms and Offices for Faculty of Applied Sciences; 3-Storey Rectory Office Block; 800-Seater Auditorium; a Block of Staff Secondary School Classroom; Rector’s Lodge, Deputy Rector’s Lodge; Registrar’s Lodge; Bursar’s Lodge; Librarian’s Lodge, Block of Offices for the Continuing Education Centre, Central Laboratory for Environmental Studies, water factory, among others.

He also embarked on rapid transformation and deepening of the academic integrity of the polytechnic, including facilitating collaborations and linkages with 14 local and international institutions. During Professor Ajibefun’s tenure as Rector, Rufus Giwa Polytechnic was ranked by an international body, the United States Transparency International Standards, USTIS, as the Best State Polytechnic in Nigeria. An international academic, professor Ajibefun has won over 14 foreign/local research fellowships and grants, including those from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany; African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Nairobi, Kenya; the Japan Foundation, among others.

Professor Ajibefun has attended numerous foreign trainings and had academic experiences, including those at the Galilee International Management Institute, Israel; Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape and Land Use Research, Germany; University of New England, Armidale, Australia, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. He has received over 15 leadership awards in recognition of his leadership capabilities.

He is also a consultant to several international and local bodies, including the World Bank, Forum for Agriculture in Africa (FARA), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), USAID, etc. Professor Ajibefun has written 70 academic publications and supervised several postgraduate students. Professor Ajibefun’s sterling administrative achievements have earned him numerous distinctions, including a Letter of Commendation from the Proprietor of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, the Ondo State Government, for delivering good governance, academic integrity and for judicious use of available resources for massive physical and capital development in the institution during his tenure as Rector; Letter of Commendation from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, etc.

Professor Ajibefun is a member of professional bodies. These include European Society for Soil Conservation (ESSC), International Association for Agricultural Economists (IAAE), African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Network; Asian Society of Agricultural Economists (ASAE), Nigerian Economic Society, Nigerian Participatory Rural Appraisal Network (NIPRANET) and Conference of Heads of Polytechnics in Nigeria.
